Crown

What is a Crown? Back to Top
A crown, also called a 'cap,' is a tooth-like restoration that is placed over a prepared existing tooth to restore the function, contour, appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns serve to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured, broken, or has had root canal treatment.
When is a Crown recommended? Back to Top
A crown is placed for a number of reasons:

  • to support a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining
  • to attach a bridge
  • to protect weak teeth from fracturing
  • to restore fractured teeth
  • to cover badly shaped or discolored teeth
  • to cover a dental implant
Steps in Treatment Back to Top
The tooth is prepared, impressions are taken and a temporary crown is placed. The impression is sent to the lab to fabricate the crown. The lab returns the completed crown to the dentist approximately two to three weeks later. The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is placed.
Care Tips Back to Top
Crowns function and feel like your natural teeth and their care should be the same which includes brushing, flossing and routine dental cleanings and examinations.
