FINALLY, THERE IS A MORE
COMFORTABLE SLEEP APNEA & SNORING
SOLUTION!
An oral orthotic appliance may be able to help solve your snoring and sleepiness caused
by sleep apnea. Surgical options and the CPAP, (Continuous
Positive Airway Pressure), are often obstructive, invasive and could have
serious side effects. Now there is a
quicker, more comfortable, less expensive & less intrusive solution. An oral orthotic appliance repositions the
lower jaw and the tongue. Since our
tongues are actually attached to the front part of our chin, the appliance
works by pulling the chin forward which automatically pulls the tongue
forward. This results in opening the
airway decreasing or eliminating sleep
apnea and snoring.
WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA),
“Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep apnea found in
more than 12 million Americans. It is
caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of
the throat collapses and closes during sleep”.
Unfortunately, through the “lack of awareness by the public and healthcare
professionals, the vast majority remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated,
despite the fact hat this serious disorder can have significant
consequences.” If untreated sleep apnea
can lead to some serious health issues including “high blood pressure and other
cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency and headaches”.
HOW TO GET AN ORAL
ORTHOTIC APPLIANCE:
A dentist educated in sleep apnea equipment can fit you with
such an appliance.
Dr. Gy Yatros of the Island Dental Spa on Anna Maria Island does just that. He is one of the few in the country that routinely
treats those disorders with sleep dental devices.
First, he would conduct a limited dental exam and jaw
exam. Afterwards, impressions are taken
of the upper and lower teeth and sent to a highly skilled lab. The procedure lasts approximately 40 minutes
to 1 hour. The appliance actually
resembles a mouth guard (or upper tray) hinged in the middle to a similar lower
tray. The hinges allow the dentist to
adjust the appliance as needed.
Approximately 2 weeks later the patient returns for the device to be
fitted and adjusted by Dr. Yatros.
Note: I will be contacting
you soon to see if you have an interest in covering this important story for
the public.
