A REAL
MAKEOVER STORY THAT WILL CHANGE A LIFE
HOLMES BEACH (BRADENTON AREA), FLORIDA (NOVEMBER 19, 2004) Debbie
Scott, who generously volunteered for many organizations over the
years, now required volunteer help of her own. A previous injury had
left her without insurance and in poor medical health - unable to
eat and weighing less than 85 pounds. After becoming a finalist for
ABC’s Extreme Makeover and traveling to LA…she was ultimately not
selected. Dr. Yatros met Debbie soon after and decided to fulfill
her hopes and dreams of a makeover and a new life.
Now after 2 1/2 months of treatment, Debbie and Dr. Yatros are
ready to reveal her $13,000 smile makeover and her brand new
life-changing look. Dr. Yatros also convinced Dave Jensen of Natural
Prosthetic Dental Lab and Ron Perdue of Ron Perdue Dental Lab, both
in Bradenton, Florida to provide their services and labor gratis as
well.
“My life before flying to LA was lived day to day. I hated the
world. I was so sick, so hurt, so tired, and so hungry. My teeth
were jagged, missing, discolored, infected, abscessed, riddled with
gum disease. I dressed down to draw less attention to myself. Little
kids were scared and worried about me”, Debbie says about her life
before.
“I can’t believe how this has changed my life”, Debbie says.
“Now, I’m getting healthy, feeling better, and loving every day. My
plans before the smile weren’t plans I was just trying to stay
alive. Those days are gone. I’ve started my own home business. I
have met my neighbors who I used to shy away from. I’m gaining
weight and I actually had a toothbrush in my mouth for the first
time in 4 years! My day starts knowing that my smile is going to
make someone else smile. I don’t have to do any thing but tell them
my wonderful story and we share goose bumps of happiness as I relay
the love and care that has been bestowed on me.”
“The first time I saw my teeth I couldn’t understand it was me. I
went and got my video camera so I could remember how happy and
relieved I was. I sat down and cried and flashed back over the last
several years of pain, infection, disappointments, wasted wishes,
embarrassments, traumas, dentist’s visits, doctor visits, hospitals
emergency rooms, acute cares. Then I went and looked at my teeth
again and realized I was back. No more crying, no more kids worrying
about me, or my daughter asking for more prayers at school and
church.”
Dr. Yatros shared, “I love to see the look on my patients face
after my oral health restoration and smile reconstruction which in
turn improves their overall lives.” Debbie said, “Each staff member
has been very wonderful and patient with me. It is so important to
be able to smile. People who don’t or can’t smile rob the world and
themselves of so much happiness!” Dr. Yatros provided Debbie with
upper dentures, extraction of 4 teeth, 4 crowns on lower teeth and
precision lower removable partial denture.
Dr. Yatros and his team enlisted the help of several other Island
businesses including: Missy Parker, owner of A Pine Avenue Salon for
Debbie’s new hairdo; Nancy Daniele, licensed Cosmetologist for
Debbie’s makeup; Jamie DiMiceli, licensed nail technician for
Debbie’s manicure and pedicure and Amy Stickler, owner of Sun &
Surf for Debbie’s new outfit and shoes to make the look complete.
Dr. Yatros started the Island Dental Spa in 1992. He offers state
of the art technology but equally as important he provides a unique
and enjoyable experience for his patients. He is the first in the
county to offer CEREC 3 featuring “same day crowns”.
Debbie, like all patients, was greeted each visit with a Comfort
Menu (which Debbie refers to as the “How Can We Spoil You Today”
menu) to choose from a wide variety of refreshments and
entertainment; including fresh muffins, juices, hot and cold drinks
and a listing of music and TV selections. Debbie says, “I enjoyed
being treated like a queen” with warm blankets, cool or warm eye
masks and paraffin hand wax treatments. During their visit patients
can also calm their nerves with video entertainment which includes
watching DVD's or digital channels on personal video glasses or a
flat screen TV. If the patient responds better to music, they can
select their own variety to enjoy with noise-reducing headphones.
